Soil Scout System

Through the creation of two patent-pending innovations, Soil Scout has developed a small, cost-effective wireless sensor platform that depending on conditions, transmits near real-time data for up to 20 years, and at a depth of up to 4m (13ft) underground - maintenance free.

Solution Elements

Scout The core of the solution. The Scout is a small, durable, wireless buried sensor platform. The Scout transmits small packets of data from up to 4m (12’) below ground on an hourly basis (by default), to an above ground Receiving Antenna. The HYDRA Scout measures temperature, salinity and moisture. Other sensor combinations, including 3rd Party, can be integrated via Scout FLEX.

Receiving Antenna receives the Scout transmission, and passes to the Base Station. Typically pole or building mounted, it can be located up to 1km (0,6ml) away, depending on site-specific characteristics, including Scout location. The antenna type (Yagi, Omni etc.) depends on the specific requirements of the installation.

Base Station Soil Scout Receiver converts the encrypted Scout packets, and passes them to a Cellular Modem, which transmits the data to Soil Scout Cloud & Analytics platform. Transfer to local data storage is also feasible (not currently in solution). Each receiver can handle 1000+ Scouts. Up to 4 Receivers can be stacked in the Base Station to handle multiple Antennas.

ECHO Repeater In situations where the Scout signals may be too far from the Base Station’s Receiving Antenna, one or more Repeaters can be used to pass the signal along. Range up to 10km (6ml) line of sight, depending on Antenna type. The maintenance-free Echo repeater is normally powered by a solar panel and a rechargeable internal battery but can be connected to an external power as well.

Cloud & Analytics The Scout data can be analysed in multiple ways, including via a Map Overlay. The data can also be used to trigger and control automation and external systems e.g. automated irrigation, alarms.
